The Pinkprint is the third studio album by American rapper Nicki Minaj, scheduled for release on December 15 2014, by Young Money, Cash Money and Republic Records. Looking to depart from the dance-pop elements from her second studio album Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded (2012), Minaj wanted to make a follow-up record influenced by her traditional hip hopbeginnings. She collaborated with a variety of producers to achieve her desired sound.
The album has been supported by the singles “Pills n Potions“, “Anaconda“, “Only” and “Bed of Lies“. “Anaconda” peaked at number 2 on the US Billboard Hot 100, and has become Minaj’s highest-charting single to date in the United States.
Minaj released her second studio album Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded in April 2012, and released a reissued version subtitled The Re-Up in November 2012. The Re-Up was well received by critics who noted it as a return to Minaj’s Hip-Hop roots as opposed to Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded which featured more pop and dance genres. In 2013, Minaj served as a main judge during the twelfth season of American Idol, and entered the retail industry with the launch of her fragrances Pink Friday and Minajesty, and the introduction of her Kmart-exclusive clothing line. During this time Minaj filmed her acting debut in The Other Woman which premiered in April 2014.
Minaj announced “Pills n Potions” as the lead single from the album at the 2014 Billboard Music Awards. It was released on May 21, 2014. The song peaked at number 24 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.
“Anaconda” was released as the second single from the album on August 4, 2014. The song peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming Minaj’s highest-charting single in the U.S. to date.
On October 26, 2014, Minaj revealed the cover art for the album’s third single “Only” which features Drake, Lil Wayne and Chris Brown via Instagram. The song was released on October 28. The song has so far peaked at number 27 on the Billboard Hot 100.
In August 2014, Minaj confirmed that the album will be released in the fourth quarter of the year. She first mentioned its cover during her verse in “True Colors” by Wiz Khalifa, in which she raps “They know I’m a mogul for real, I branded a color / Pink is the color, can’t wait to unveil The Pinkprint cover”. On September 9, 2014, Minaj announced through her Twitter account that the record would be released on November 24, 2014. During late October, her management announced a delay in the release, which had been rescheduled to December 15. On October 31, 2014 Minaj released a trailer for the album, directed by Khalil Kavon and featured a mixture of Minaj’s recent videos (“Pills n Potions”, “Anaconda”, “Lookin Ass”) with cut-aways to a thumb being fingerprinted in pink ink. The Pinkprint was made available for pre-order on iTunes on December 3, 2014 with the intro track “All Things Go” as an instant download.
In contrast from the vibrantly-colored wardrobe and hairpieces she had become associated with earlier in her career, Minaj embraced a more understated image during promotional efforts for The Pinkprint. She opined that “You can either continue doing costumes or you can just say, ‘Hey guess what? This will shock them even more. Doing nothing will shock them even more.'”
Minaj is set to support the album with a seventeen date European tour, the tour will start on March 16 in Stockholm, Sweden, and will stop off in the United Kingdom, Norway, Germany, France, and Belgium, before ending on April 12 in Glasgow. Trey Songz will be the opening act.
